Driven desperate by poverty in Singapore, a Singaporean 54-year-old man murdered his 82-year-old disabled mother and then jumped off his 11th level apartment unit. The unnamed man was found dead in the morning at 7am yesterday (Jul 9) at the foot of HDB block 637 at Veerasamy Road, Little India.
According to his neighbour, the man was employed and in severe financial hardship. When his father died 10 years ago, he had to quit his job as a warehouse storeman to take care of his elderly mother – who had dementia and was wheelchair-bound. The neighbour said the family had lived in the unit for about 40 years, and said he loved his mother:
“He loved his mother. He would bring his mother to go out to see the doctor, and will go out to buy food for her daily too.”
Singapore is the world’s most expensive city and it is common to see residents committing suicide due to poverty.
In Sep 2018, an elderly man killed his intellectually-disabled daughter and committed suicide after, due to poverty.
In May 2017, a young mother committed suicide with her two-month old infant due to financial stress.
